Welcome back to school; 4TH AND 5TH GRADE Homework and Classwork Policy
Dear Parents,
Homework has a definite place in the educational process. It is an extension of the learning experiences children have during the instructional day. Homework is designed to aid the student in achieving classroom and school goals, and should not be used to punish or keep a student busy. I am very aware that many of my students participate in many extra-curricular activities after school and do not wish to over load them. Homework should take no longer than an hour to an hour and a half.
Every night students will have 30 minutes of reading. Please look for your child's reading log to be signed every night. I also ask for students to read at least 30 min. over the weekend. This year the students' reading homework has a more specific focus. I have assigned a different genre each month that I would like the students to read from, and a project assignment to be completed upon finishing the book. Students will then present the book they read and the project on the given due dates. Due dates have been placed on the website under "Independent Book Talks," as well as a hard copy given to the students to put in their homework folder.
Every night except Friday night students should have a math assignment based on the math concepts we learned that day in class. An exception would be if we had to take a test on a day other than Friday.
Spelling homework will usually go home on Monday and Wednesday nights. Spelling tests will be given every Thursday. Students will be given a spelling list every Friday. They are also posted on the website.
There will be very little homework in Social Studies, except maybe before a Quiz.
I don't plan on giving too much homework, however I will add more homework if I see an area of weakness among the class in any given subject.
This page should be updated weekly by Monday afternoon of that week. I may make changes to the homework though out the week, if I need to make an adjustment based on how well the students are doing in class. Unfinished class work will become extra homework.
Sincerely, Miss Corsodoro
